George was a 1958 graduate of Sheffield High School where he was a three sport letter-man for the Bulldogs in football, baseball and track. He was selected as a High School All-American in 1958 as a quarterback which led to a scholarship to Auburn University. After his freshman season with the Tigers he returned home to Florence State University where he was a catcher on the Lions baseball team. Additionally, George was a pioneer in the sport of bass fishing in the early 70's as he was instrumental in the charter of the first local bass club, The Quad Cities Bassmasters. He later became a field tester for nationally known reels such as Stren, Zebco and Daiwa. George's love for competitive fishing continued through his life ans in 1992 he became a director for Anglers Choice and Bass West USA running bass tournaments.
