As a 1971 graduate of Colbert County High School, Wayne Evans excelled as a member of the Indians' baseball team as a 3 year starting pitcher. He helped lead the squad to the 1971 Quarter Finals of the 3A/4A State Playoffs and was selected to the ALL-Area and ALL-State teams that year.  In addition, he was selected to play in the East/West ALL-Star game at Rickwood Field. After high school, Wayne continued his baseball career at Calhoun Community College as well as the University of North Alabama. During the 1972-73 seasons, he was chosen the Most Valuable Pitcher on the staff for the Warhawks at Calhoun as they captured the Alabama Junior College State Championship. He then received a scholarship to UNA playing for the Lions (1973-74). After graduation from UNA, Wayne continued to be active in his community coaching youth baseball-– leading one of his teams to the 1993 Babe Ruth World Series. In addition, Evan was outstanding in slow pitch softball for 20 years with appearances in 3 national tournaments.
