James graduated from Sheffield High School in 1975 where he was a three sport athlete for the Bulldogs. He was and Honorable Mention All-State Defensive Back in football with eight interceptions in each of his last two seasons. He was also voted to the All-Quad Cities Team in basketball. After high school he was awarded a football scholarship to Alabama A& M University and became one of only two freshmen to play. He moved to Seattle, Washington, following college playing Pro-Am basketball. Once he finished playing basketball, he started coaching youth football and basketball, coaching future pro athletes such as Demitrius Dubois, Trent Pollard, Doug Christie, James Crawford, Nate Robinson and Aaron Brooks. In 1992 he received the Outstanding Service and Humanitarian Award from the Seattle Commission on Children and Youth. In addition, in 1994, James was honored as Youth Role Model of the Year.
