Leon was a high school basketball All-American at Colbert County High School. Following a great high school career he was signed to a basketball scholarship to the University of Alabama. During Leon's time with the Tide they recorded four straight years of twenty or more victories and won the SEC Championship in each of his last three seasons. The 1975 and 1976 teams were the first ever to be invited to the NCAA Tournament. Leon was All-SEC all four years at Alabama and twice SEC Player of the Year.He was also selected Alabama's Amateur Athlete of the year in 1975.

 

Following his years at Alabama he went on to play seven  years in the NBA with the Detroit Pistons and Kansas City Kings as well as several more years in Europe.
