Jack Voorhies

Class of 2001

A 1944 graduate of Sheffield High School, Jack Voorhies earned two letters playing football under Coach Walton Wright. He received a degree in speech from North Western University in Evanston, Illinois.

 

Voorhies was a well-known radio personality throughout the Shoals area. He served as the voice of the Deshler Tigers from 1963 to 1978 and did both football and basketball play-by-play for the University of North Alabama from 1975 to 1978.

 

He became known for his sense of humor and original "on-air" voices and was a Master of Ceremonies emceeing numerous events throughout the Shoals including the functions of the Quad Cities Quarterback Club. Voorhies also emceed the very first Colbert County Sports Hall of Fame Induction Banquet on July 11, 2000.
