John attended Deshler High School, graduating in 1963. He played football and ran track for the Tigers earning four letters in track and three in football. John was selected All-State in football in 1963 and was chosen to play in the 1963 Alabama High School football All-Star Game in Tuscaloosa. Upon completion of high school he received a scholarship to Vanderbilt University and started three years as a defensive back. He holds the school record for the longest interception returned (98 Yards)for a touchdown. He graduated from Vanderbilt in 1968 and was commisioned through ROTC,  a second lieutenat in the Army and served in Viet Nam.
