Fredrick graduated from Colbert County High School where he was a 3 year starter playing linebacker, tight end and fullback for Coach Don Creasy. As a member of the Indians he was a 2 time All-Area and All-State performer as well as being the Times Daily Player of the Year. He was instrumental in helping to lead CCHS to the 1985 5A State Championship. Following high school he signed a scholarship with Jacksonville State University. As a Gamecock he was 3 year starter and was the Gulf South Conference Freshman Defensive Player of the Year in 1986. He was selected All-GSC and a permanent team captain in 1989 when Jacksonville State won the GSC Championship along with finishing as runner-up in the Division II National Championship Game. During his senior season he had 112 tackles, 5 sacks, 5 pass break-ups, 3 interceptions and 12 tackles for a loss.
