A 1985 graduate of Sheffield High School, Greg was an outstanding performer for the Bulldogs basketball team during his high school career.

As a junior he led the team in scoring averaging 15.7 points per game and in rebounding with 8.7 boards per contest. During that 1983-84 season he was selected to the All County Tournament Team, the All Times Daily Classic Tournament Team, All-Area Second Team, and was twice named the Times Daily player of the Week. Greg followed his junior year with an even more impressive senior year. In the 1984-85 season he again led the team in scoring at a 20.2 points per game clip and averaged 10 rebounds per game. He once again was honored by being named to the All County Tournament Team, All Times Daily Classic Team, the All-Area Team, four times named the Player of the Week by Times Daily, and was Honorable Mention All-State. Following high school Greg was signed to a basketball scholarship by the University of North Alabama where he played on the 1988 Gulf South tournament Champion team. He played four seasons for the Lions and was named Sixth Man of year in 1986-87 and Most Improved player in 1987-88.
