Tommy was a graduate of Deshler High School in 1945 and Auburn University in 1950. He played both football and baseball during his high school career, but it was in the area of support that he left his mark on the young people of Tuscumbia. He worked with the Tuscumbia Little League for twenty-one years, serving as president as well as coaching. In addition, he served as the public address announcer for Deshler High School Football for more than twenty years. As the "Voice of the Tigers", his knowledge of the game and the manner in which he presented information during games at Howard Chappell Stadium was respected by all.
