A 1977 graduate of Sheffield High School, Byron played football, basketball and ran track for the Bulldogs. He signed with Auburn University for both football and track. He was a member of three SEC Track Championships and was both an indoor and outdoor track All-American (1980). He is 13th in all time pass receptions (74 total) at Auburn.   

Byron played seven years in the National Football League as a wide reciever for both Buffalo and Seattle.
