Amos was very involved in the process in which the junior high school became a high school in 1964. He was a leader in the community and a school trustee during the years that the foundation was established for the school to graduate its first class in 1967. He also took the lead in the construction of the football field and stadium doing everything from picking up rocks, hauling dirt, and laying sod to the construction of the field house. As a member of the athletic boosters club from 1964 until his death he was a vital part of taking on many projects to improve the athletic facilities. The football stadium is named in his honor (Amos Mitchell Stadium).
