Jimmy's football career began in 1943 with the Deshler Tigers. He played varsity football from that year through 1947. In 1946 he was team captain making both the All Tri-Cities team and the All TVC Team.That same year, the Tigers were undefeated. In 1947 he was again team captain, winning the Most Outstanding Athlete Award and making the All Tri-Cities Team. He played in the first Alabama North-South All-Star game. In addition to football, he also played basketball, baseball and ran track. Following high school he was offered scholarships to Memphis State, Ole Miss, ad the University of Alabama. He was signed to a scholarship to Alabama and played for Tide until he suffered a severe knee injury.
