Starr was a 1969 graduate of Colbert County High School where she was a varsity cheerleader and a gifted athlete. During her years in high school opportunities were limited for female athletes, but she was active in independent and church league competition for over 25 years.  In her senior years she continued to compete, playing in a Super Senior Tennis League in which her team won a State Championship in 2010. Starr's greatest passion was her involvement in both Colbert Heights High School and youth sports programs in the Colbert Heights community where she lived. She took the lead in organizing youth programs, coaching teams and serving as an officer in booster club her entire life. Additionally she was a volunteer coach in both basketball and volleyball on the high school level. Her support for Colbert Heights athletics was unlimited and her greatest accomplishment was being the driving force in the decision by the Colbert County Board of Education to begin high school girl's softball in the county school in 1986. On April 1, 2012, the Colbert County Board of Education adopted a resolution naming the Colbert Heights High School Softball Field in honor of Mrs Starr Boatwright.
