Ray began radio work in 1973 and from that time on he became a vital part of the Sheffield High School athletic program until he retired in 2003. He was involved as a color commentator for 5 years and did play-by-play for the next 26 years. During that period of time he worked over 800 football and basketball gamed including state football playoff games from Legion Field in Birmingham. He was also involved in the Sheffield Little League program serving as as president, vice-president, player agent. and public address work. In 2002 he completed a project to honor the greatest players of all time at Sheffield High School. Additionally he compiled a history of Sheffield football dating back to 1927.
