Thomas graduated from Sheffield High School in 1991 where he excelled as a member of the Bulldogs basketball team. During his career hr led the team to a record of 89-11 and two area championships. He averaged 22.6  points per game shooting 54 per cent from the field and scored a total of 1041 points in four  varsity seasons. He also averaged 11 rebounds per contest and scored a personal high of 44 points against Lauderdale County High School. Thomas was selected to both the All-Area and All-State teams in 1991.His high school success led to a Basketball scholarship to David Lipscomb University where he would help lead the Bisons to four consecutive NAIA Tournaments. Thomas finished his college career at David Lipscomb on the all time points list with 1247 points solidifying his place as one of the University's all time greatest players.
