Calvin graduated from Colbert County High School in 1972. He as a member of the Indians basketball squad coached by Hall of Fame member Jerry Daily from 1970 to 1972 that was 3-A State runner up in the 1970-1971 season and State Champion in the 1971-9172 season He was selected to the Alabama High School All-Tournament team both seasons for his outstanding performances. Calvin averaged 16 points per game, 12 rebounds per game and was selected co-captain during the 1970-1971 season. Following high school he was signed to a basketball scholarship by Illinois State University. He later transferred to Calhoun Community College playing for one year before accepting a scholarship to Arkansas State University. From 1974 to 1976 he played for the ASU Indians, graduating in 1976 with a B.S. degree in Business Administration.
