Walter Mullins graduated from sterling High School in Sheffield. He was a three year letterman in football in high school and went on to play college football for Alabama A & M and was inducted in the University's Athletic Hall of Fame in 1993.

Following college he became the head Football Coach and Head Basketball Coach at Cherokee High School where he coached for sixteen years.Following the closing of Cherokee he coached for five more years at Cherokee Vocational High School and for five more years at Leighton Middle School. Coach Mullins has been honored by the Alabama High School Athletic Association for twenty-five years of distinguished service.
