Todd was a 1980 graduate of Deshler High School where he was a three year letter-man for the Tigers playing offense and defense. While anchoring the offense at center he was chosen the best offensive lineman in 1978 and 1979 as well as playing linebacker/defensive end. Todd was selected honorable mention All-State in 1979 and was a Deshler team captain. After high school he attended Tennessee Military Institute, a post graduate prep program on a football scholarship in 1980 where he was chosen the most outstanding offensive lineman. He was then signed by Mississippi State University where he lettered four years from 1981-1984. As a member of Coach Emory Bellard's Bulldogs, Todd played center and was the long snapper. He was awarded Special Teams Player of the Weed following his performance in the 1981 Mississippi State-Alabama game.
