Wayne was a 1974 graduate of Hayes High School in Birmingham where he was an outstanding basketball player for Coach Willie Scoggins. During his senior year he was listed as one of the top 30 players in the nation and was selected to the All–State Team. Additional he was selected to the All -Tournament Team as Hayes defeated Anniston 78-37 in the 4A finals. Following high school, he was awarded a scholarship to Auburn University where he played four years for Coach Bob Davis. After graduating from Auburn Wayne embarked on a high school career that included Huffman and Deshler. It was at Deshler where he had tremendous success with a record of 334-283 that spanned 22 seasons. During his tenure as the head coach at Deshler the Tiger basketball teams won 6 Area Championships, 5 Northwest Regional Championships and made 6 final four appearances. He was chosen Times Daily 4A-6A Coach of the Year four times and was selected to coach in the North/South All-Star game in 2004. He had 6 players sign college scholarships.
