Class of 2008

Gil was a 1956 graduate of Deshler High School where he was a three sport athlete. He lettered four years in football, baseball and basketball. He was selected to the All Tri-Cities and All Tennessee Valley Conference football teams as a Tiger. In addition he was chosen as the Most Valuable Player in the TVC and the Outstanding Back by the Tri-Cities Quarterback Club. He made the All-State team and was a high school All-American. Following high school he was signed to a football scholarship by Mississippi State where he played as a freshman. Following an injury he returned home to play three years at Florence State where he was Honorable Mention All-American. After college he became a successful teacher and coach at Coffee, Scottsboro and Colbert Heights. Following his coaching career, he became the principal at both Colbert Heights Elementary and Colbert Heights High School.
