Bill graduated from Deshler High School in 1969 where he played football and was a member of Tigers track team. He was a three year letter-man in football and was a two way starter as an offensive and defensive tackle as well as linebacker during his high school career. He was selected to the first Coaches All Quad-Cities Quarterback Club's "A.C. Curry Award", and was awarded the "Dr. Bowden Beck Award" as the Most Valuable Player on the Deshler Football Team. In addition he was selected to the All-Tennessee Valley Conference Team and the 3A All-State Team. He also was chosen to play in the Alabama High School All Star Game in Tuscaloosa. Following high school he signed a football scholarship with Florence State University where he was a three year starter for the Lions at offensive guard.
